SYNOPSIS

Olivia asks for guidance from Sam Weiss at the bowling alley before joining the Fringe team in their investigation of a businessman in Seattle who attacked his boss spontaneously for no apparent reason and has been unconscious for 16 hours since. When he wakes up, he has no recollection of the attack, his hair turns white, and he dies. A series of similar incidents in the Seattle area occur that appear to have waking nightmares in common.

CASE REPORT SUMMARY:

At Langdon & Rob law firm in Seattle, Washington, employee Greg Leiter beat his boss to death with his briefcase and then passed out, remaining in a deep sleep in this hospital for sixteen hours. Doctors revived him, and he had no memory of the attack, just of seeing the office filled with demon creatures led by his boss, Carl Langdon. Leiter then had a seizure, his hair turned white, and he died. Cause of death: acute exhaustion.
Leiter was part of a large-scale clinical trial for his sleep issues led by Dr. Laxmeesh Nayak. Subjects had a small wireless transmitter placed in their brain to monitor sleep cycles and stimulate the thalamus, which induces a deeper sleep state. It also functions as a relay tower to the cerebral cortex, which controls motor function. After other similar violent cases, Dr. Bishop discovered that Dr. Nayak's biochips were siphoning his patients' dreams so their brains could never recharge. The chips could turn on a dreaming state while the patient was awake, leading to paranoia, hallucinations, and a complete inability to differentiate between reality and dreams, which ultimately killed them. Dr. Nayak was in fact secretly addicted to accessing the dreams of his patients. Once he found out the cost, he plugged in to one last patient, which killed him.

The last Challenger mission was Mission 10 and launched on January 28, 1986, and ended in disaster. This dream is based on Peter's childhood memories in the alternate universe before he was kidnapped in "Peter".
